Many Nigerian graduates list “NYSC” or “National Service” on their CV without explaining what they actually did. That can make valuable experience look like a formality instead of evidence that you can work, solve problems and take responsibility.
Your national service experience should be presented like any other work experience. State your role, organisation, location, dates, responsibilities and measurable contributions. If you handled records, taught students, supported an office, organised activities or used digital tools, explain those duties clearly.

Should NYSC be included as work experience?
Yes, especially if you are applying for your first job or have limited professional experience. Your primary assignment and relevant community development activities can demonstrate workplace skills, even when the role was not a conventional permanent job.
However, do not describe the experience in a way that overstates your authority. An employer needs an accurate picture of what you were responsible for and what you achieved.
You can include national service under a heading such as:
- Work Experience
- Professional Experience
- National Service Experience
Use “National Service Experience” if you want to make the nature of the role immediately clear. Use “Work Experience” when your service role fits naturally with your other employment and internships.
What information to include
A clear CV entry normally contains five important details:
- Job title or service role: For example, Corps Member, Graduate Teacher, Administrative Assistant or IT Support Corps Member.
- Organisation: Name the school, company, government office, non-governmental organisation or other host organisation.
- Location: Include the city and state where appropriate.
- Dates: Give the month and year you started and finished, or use “Present” if the service is ongoing.
- Responsibilities and achievements: Explain the work using concise bullet points.
For example:
Administrative Assistant, National Service
Bright Path Educational Centre, Ibadan, Oyo State
November 2023 – October 2024
- Maintained student records and organised paper and digital files for daily administrative use.
- Supported the preparation of reports, correspondence and weekly activity schedules.
- Assisted teachers and office staff with routine communication and enquiries from parents.
This is more useful than writing only “Served at Bright Path Educational Centre during NYSC.”
Describe duties in employer-friendly language
Some service activities have informal names that an employer outside the organisation may not immediately understand. Translate them into language that shows the practical skill involved.
| What you did | How it can appear on your CV |
|---|---|
| Taught students | Prepared and delivered lessons, assessed learners and maintained classroom records. |
| Worked in an office | Managed correspondence, updated records and supported daily administrative operations. |
| Helped with an NGO project | Supported community outreach, participant registration and activity reporting. |
| Used spreadsheets | Entered, organised and checked data using spreadsheet software. |
| Managed social media | Created and scheduled informational content and responded to audience enquiries. |
| Organised a CDS activity | Coordinated volunteers, communicated with stakeholders and supported project delivery. |
The aim is not to use complicated words. It is to show how the activity relates to the position you want.
Focus on transferable skills
National service can help you demonstrate skills that employers value across many industries. Select the skills that are relevant to the vacancy instead of listing every activity you performed.
Communication
Teaching, public speaking, writing reports, answering enquiries and working with community members can all support a communication claim.
Organisation
Scheduling activities, maintaining records, coordinating events and meeting reporting deadlines can show that you work in an organised way.
Teamwork
Explain how you worked with teachers, supervisors, volunteers, office staff, community leaders or other corps members.
Digital ability
If you used Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, school management software, social media tools or other applications, name them when they are relevant to the job.
Adaptability and responsibility
Working in a new organisation or location may demonstrate your ability to adjust to unfamiliar procedures, colleagues and audiences. Support this claim with a specific example rather than simply describing yourself as “adaptable.”
Turn responsibilities into achievements
Responsibilities explain what you were expected to do. Achievements show how you contributed. Where possible, include a result, scale or improvement without inventing figures.
Compare these two versions:
- Weak: “Helped with student registration.”
- Stronger: “Supported student registration by checking submitted information, arranging forms and directing students to the appropriate office.”
If you have a verified number, you may use it: “Entered records for more than 200 students.” If you do not know the exact number, use accurate wording such as “supported student registration during the admission period.” Never create statistics to make the CV sound more impressive.
You can also describe a problem and your contribution to solving it:
“Reorganised shared digital folders and introduced consistent file names, making frequently used documents easier for staff to locate.”
Only use this wording if you actually made that change.
How to list community development activities
Community Development Service activities can be useful when they show leadership, project coordination, outreach, fundraising, teaching, health education, environmental work or another skill connected to the vacancy.
You do not need to list every meeting or routine activity. Create a separate entry or include two or three bullets under your national service entry if the activity is relevant.
For example:
Community Project Volunteer, National Service Community Development Service
Ogun State | 2024
- Supported an education outreach project by helping to plan sessions, communicate with participants and organise materials.
- Worked with other volunteers to coordinate activities and prepare a summary report for project records.
For a project-management, education, communications or nonprofit role, this may be important evidence. For an unrelated technical role, keep it brief and give more space to technical projects or relevant employment.
Where to place your service certificate
You may mention the availability of your NYSC discharge certificate or exemption certificate in a short “Additional Information” or “Certifications” section, where it is relevant to the employer’s requirements.
Do not attach sensitive identity documents to a general job application unless the employer or official application process specifically requests them. A CV should not contain your National Identification Number, bank details, passwords, PINs, one-time passwords or other private information.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Listing only “NYSC”: This tells the reader almost nothing about your capability.
- Using one generic CV for every job: Emphasise teaching for education roles, administration for office roles and digital work for technology or communications roles.
- Writing a long personal story: Keep the entry focused on evidence that supports your application.
- Overusing “assisted”: Use precise verbs such as organised, prepared, maintained, coordinated, analysed, taught or created when they accurately describe your work.
- Claiming skills without examples: Instead of saying “excellent leadership,” describe the activity you coordinated.
- Hiding an unfinished service year: Use accurate dates and state that the role is ongoing if you are still serving.
A simple formula for writing each bullet
Use this pattern:
Action verb + task + context or method + result, where verified.
For example:
- Prepared weekly lesson materials and assessed student work to support classroom learning.
- Updated office records and organised digital files so staff could retrieve routine documents more easily.
- Created informational posts for a community programme and responded to basic participant enquiries.
Choose two to five strong bullets for the service role. A short CV is not improved by repeating the same duty in different words.
Final review before sending your CV
- Are the organisation, role and dates clearly stated?
- Can an employer understand what you actually did?
- Have you connected the experience to the job you want?
- Are your achievements accurate and supported by real examples?
- Have you removed private identity, banking and account-security information?
- Is the formatting consistent with the rest of the CV?
National service is not valuable merely because it appears on your CV. It becomes valuable when the reader can see the work behind the title. Describe the setting, show your contribution and connect the skills to the employer’s needs. That turns a compulsory service period into clear evidence of readiness for the next opportunity.
