How to Check Your BVN Details and Correct an Error

Your Bank Verification Number (BVN) is linked to your identity across participating Nigerian banks. If the name, date of birth, phone number or other information attached to your BVN does not match your bank records or identity document, you may experience problems with account services, verification and some financial applications.

The safest way to resolve a BVN problem is to confirm the information first, identify the exact error and contact your bank through an official channel. Do not share your PIN, password, one-time password (OTP) or complete card details with anyone claiming to help you “update” your BVN.

What information is linked to your BVN?

A BVN record may contain personal information collected during enrolment, including your name, date of birth, photograph, fingerprints, phone number and other identity details. Banks use this information to help confirm that accounts belonging to the same customer are linked to the correct person.

Some details may be displayed differently by different banks. For example, a name could appear in a different order, or a middle name could be missing. That does not automatically mean the BVN itself is wrong. The important question is whether the information matches your valid identity records and the details held by your bank.

How to check your BVN details

Option 1: Use your bank’s official channel

Start with the bank account connected to your BVN. Depending on the bank, you may be able to check or confirm your BVN through its mobile app, internet banking service, USSD platform, ATM or customer-service channel.

Log in only through the bank’s official app or website. If you use USSD, dial the code published by your bank from the phone number registered on your account. Do not rely on a code sent to you by a social-media account, random blog or unknown person.

Option 2: Use the recognised BVN enquiry service

The USSD enquiry code commonly associated with checking a BVN is *565*0#. Availability, charges and the required phone number may depend on the service and your network. Use the service only from the phone number linked to your bank records, and read the prompt carefully before confirming.

If the code does not work, do not repeatedly give your details to unofficial agents. Contact your bank and ask for the correct way to retrieve or confirm your BVN.

Option 3: Visit a bank branch

You can visit your bank if you cannot access the digital channels, if your phone number has changed or if you need to compare your BVN information with your account records. Take an accepted means of identification and any account information the bank may need to locate your profile.

Ask the customer-service officer to tell you the specific information that appears incorrect. Avoid guessing. A correction request is easier to process when you know whether the problem concerns your name, date of birth, phone number or another field.

What to do if your BVN details are incorrect

1. Confirm the source of the error

Compare the information on your BVN record with the details on your valid identity document and your bank account. Check spelling, order of names, initials, date of birth and phone number.

Also check whether the error is only a display issue. For example, a bank application may shorten your name while the underlying record is correct. A bank representative can help confirm this.

2. Contact the bank where you enrolled for your BVN

BVN corrections are generally handled through a bank, especially the institution where your biometric details were captured. Explain the error and request the bank’s BVN data-update or correction process.

If you have accounts with several banks, start with the bank where you completed BVN enrolment. Another bank may still be able to guide you, but the enrolment bank may need to initiate or approve the correction.

3. Take the required documents

The documents required depend on the type of correction and the bank’s verification procedure. You may be asked for an accepted identity document, your account details and evidence supporting the requested change.

For a name correction, the bank may require documentation showing the legal change or confirming the correct name. For a date-of-birth correction, it may request an identity document or other supporting evidence. The bank will tell you what it accepts, so confirm the requirements before making multiple trips.

4. Complete biometric or identity verification when requested

Because the BVN is a biometric identity record, the bank may need to verify you in person or complete another identity-checking process. Cooperate with the official procedure, but do not allow anyone to take your phone, enter your banking password or request your OTP without a clear and legitimate reason.

5. Keep your acknowledgement or reference details

Ask for an acknowledgement, reference number or other evidence that your request was submitted. Keep it safely, along with the date of submission and the branch or customer-service channel used.

After the bank confirms that the correction has been processed, check your BVN and account information again. If the updated details do not appear immediately, ask the bank when you should check again and how to follow up.

Important mistakes to avoid

  • Do not enrol for a second BVN because you cannot find the first one. Ask your bank to trace the existing record.
  • Do not pay an unofficial agent. A person who promises instant correction or asks you to send sensitive banking information may be attempting fraud.
  • Do not post your BVN online. Treat it as sensitive personal information, even though it is not the same as a PIN or password.
  • Do not use another person’s phone or identity document. Corrections must be based on your own verified information.
  • Do not assume a failed verification means your BVN is invalid. The problem could be a spelling difference, incorrect date of birth, outdated phone number or a mismatch between institutions.

What if you live outside Nigeria?

Nigerians living abroad should contact their Nigerian bank through its official international customer-service channel before travelling or sending documents. The bank can explain whether the correction can begin remotely, whether a branch visit is necessary and which documents are accepted.

Do not send identity documents to an unofficial WhatsApp number or an unverified email address. Use the contact details published on the bank’s official website or within its official app.

A simple checklist before visiting the bank

  • Write down the exact BVN error.
  • Compare your details with a valid identity document.
  • Take the required identification and account information.
  • Use the bank where you completed BVN enrolment if possible.
  • Ask about any applicable official fee before submitting the request.
  • Request a reference or acknowledgement for the correction.
  • Check the updated information after the bank confirms completion.

The key is to correct the original record through a regulated bank, not to create another BVN or hand your information to a third party. Confirm the exact error, provide genuine supporting documents and protect your banking credentials throughout the process.
