How to Fix Mobile Data That Is Not Working in Nigeria

When mobile data stops working, the problem may be your data bundle, phone settings, SIM card, network coverage or the mobile network itself. Before replacing your phone or buying another bundle, follow these steps in order.

These instructions are suitable for common Android phones and iPhones used in Nigeria. Menu names may differ slightly depending on your phone brand, iOS or Android version, and network provider.

1. Confirm that mobile data is turned on

Start with the simplest check:

  • Open your phone’s quick settings or Control Centre.
  • Turn on Mobile Data.
  • Turn off Wi-Fi temporarily so you can confirm whether the mobile connection works.
  • Check whether a 4G, LTE, 3G, E or H symbol appears near the signal bars.

If mobile data is on but no network symbol appears, move outside or to a different location. Thick walls, underground areas and places with weak coverage can prevent a usable connection even when your phone shows signal bars.

2. Check whether your data bundle has finished

A common reason mobile data stops working is that the bundle has been exhausted or has expired. Check your balance through your network provider’s official mobile app, website or USSD service. Use only the provider’s verified channels, since fake balance-checking pages and social media accounts may try to collect your personal information.

Also check whether:

  • You bought airtime instead of a data bundle.
  • The bundle was used by automatic updates, video streaming or cloud backups.
  • Your phone is connected to a hotspot or sharing data with another device.
  • A special bundle only works with certain apps or at particular times.

If your balance is zero, buy a valid data plan and wait briefly before testing again. Do not share your PIN, password or one-time password with anyone claiming to help activate the bundle.

3. Restart the connection

Temporary network registration problems can often be cleared without changing any advanced settings.

  1. Turn on Airplane Mode.
  2. Wait for about 30 seconds.
  3. Turn Airplane Mode off.
  4. Wait for the phone to reconnect to the mobile network.

If that does not work, restart the phone. A restart can refresh the SIM connection and remove a temporary software or network error.

4. Check the correct SIM for mobile data

On dual-SIM phones, calls may use one SIM while mobile data is assigned to the other. Confirm that the SIM with an active data bundle is selected for internet access.

On Android, look under settings such as SIMs, Mobile Network or Connections. On an iPhone with more than one line, check Settings > Mobile Service or Cellular and select the correct line for mobile data.

Also confirm that the SIM has not been disabled. If the phone displays “No SIM”, remove the SIM carefully, check for visible dirt or damage, and insert it again. If possible, test the SIM in another compatible phone. Do not bend the SIM or force it into the tray.

5. Check network mode and coverage

Your phone may be set to a network mode that is unavailable or unreliable in your current location. Open the mobile network settings and select an automatic option such as 4G/3G/2G auto or the equivalent recommended by the phone.

If 4G is weak in your area, temporarily testing an automatic or lower network mode may show whether the issue is limited to 4G coverage. This may reduce speed, but it can help you make calls or use basic internet services.

Coverage can vary between neighbourhoods, buildings and providers. If other people using the same network nearby also have no service, the problem may be a local outage rather than your phone.

6. Check the APN settings

The Access Point Name, usually called APN, tells your phone how to connect to your provider’s mobile internet service. An incorrect APN can leave you with signal bars but no internet.

First, look for an option such as Reset APN, Reset to default or Reset mobile network settings within the APN menu. This is safer than copying settings from an unverified website.

If you need to enter APN details manually, obtain the exact settings from your network provider’s official website, customer-care channel or verified app. Do not assume that settings for one provider will work on another. Save the settings, select the new APN and restart the phone.

7. Turn off settings that may block or limit data

Several phone features can make it appear that mobile data is not working:

  • Data Saver: may restrict background access for some apps.
  • Data limit: may automatically switch off data after a set amount is used.
  • App-level restrictions: may prevent a particular app from using mobile data.
  • VPN or private DNS: may interfere with some connections if incorrectly configured.
  • Battery-saving mode: may delay background activity.

Check these settings if only one app is affected. If every app is offline, the issue is more likely to involve the bundle, SIM, APN, coverage or network service.

8. Check the phone’s date and time

Incorrect date and time settings can cause problems with secure websites and some applications. Set the phone to update the date, time and time zone automatically. Then close and reopen the affected app or browser.

9. Reset network settings

If mobile data still does not work, reset the phone’s network settings. This can remove incorrect mobile, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and VPN configurations.

Be aware that this step may delete saved Wi-Fi passwords and paired Bluetooth devices. Make sure you know your important Wi-Fi password before continuing. Look for an option such as Reset network settings in the phone’s reset or general-management menu.

10. Contact the network provider

Contact your provider through its official customer-care number, app, website or service centre if:

  • Your bundle was deducted but mobile internet never became active.
  • The SIM cannot connect in multiple locations or compatible phones.
  • Your number is barred, inactive or affected by an account issue.
  • There is a suspected outage in your area.
  • You need the provider’s correct APN settings.

Give the provider useful details such as your location, phone model, network mode, the time the problem began and whether calls or SMS still work. Never give an agent your banking PIN, card PIN, password, OTP or SIM replacement code.

Quick diagnosis

What you noticeLikely area to check
No signal or “Emergency calls only”Coverage, SIM registration, SIM damage or network outage
Signal bars but no internetData balance, APN, network mode or provider service
Only one app is offlineApp permissions, Data Saver, app outage or app settings
Data works slowlyNetwork congestion, weak coverage, background downloads or bundle restrictions
Calls work but data does notData plan, APN, mobile-data SIM selection or data settings

What to avoid

Do not install random “network booster” applications, enter your SIM details on unofficial pages or pay a stranger who promises to reactivate your data remotely. Such offers can expose your account or install harmful software. Avoid changing advanced network settings repeatedly without recording the original values.

In most cases, the fastest solution is to confirm your data balance, refresh the connection, select the correct SIM and reset or verify the APN. If the same SIM fails in more than one phone and location, stop troubleshooting the handset and ask the network provider to check the line or a possible outage.
