USSD Transaction Errors: Checks to Make Before Trying Again

A failed USSD transaction does not always mean that no money was moved. The request may have timed out, the bank’s system may be responding slowly, or your account may have been debited even though the confirmation message did not appear.

Before dialling the code again, pause and confirm what happened. Repeating the transaction too quickly can create a duplicate payment, especially when the first request is still being processed.

First, identify the type of error

The message displayed on your phone can help you decide what to do next. Common USSD errors include:

  • Network error or connection problem: The mobile network or bank service may not have completed the session.
  • Insufficient funds: Your available balance may be too low, including any applicable bank or transfer charge.
  • Invalid PIN or account details: The transaction may contain an incorrect PIN, account number, bank selection or other information.
  • Service unavailable: The bank’s USSD platform may be temporarily unavailable or undergoing maintenance.
  • Session timeout: You may have taken too long to complete the prompts, or the connection may have dropped.
  • Transaction limit reached: You may have reached a daily, account or channel limit.

Do not assume that every error means the same thing. A wrong PIN requires a different response from a temporary network failure.

Check whether your account was debited

This is the most important check before trying again. Look at your bank balance through a trusted channel, such as your bank’s official mobile application, internet banking, ATM or an alert from the bank. Use only the contact details and applications provided through official bank channels.

For a transfer, ask the recipient to check their account as well. A delayed alert does not necessarily mean that the recipient has not received the money. Account balances and transaction histories are usually more useful than SMS alerts alone, because alerts can be delayed or fail to arrive.

If your account was debited, do not immediately repeat the transaction. Save the transaction reference, amount, date, time and recipient details. The bank may automatically reverse a failed transaction, but the timing and process can differ between institutions. Contact the bank if the money is not reversed within the period stated by the bank or if the recipient does not receive it.

Confirm the recipient and transaction details

If the account was not debited, review every detail before making another attempt:

  • Confirm the recipient’s bank and account number.
  • Check the name displayed for the account where the service provides a name confirmation.
  • Confirm the amount, including the amount available for any applicable charge.
  • Check that you selected the correct transaction option, such as transfer, airtime or bill payment.
  • Make sure you are using the USSD service linked to the correct bank account.

Do not continue if the account name does not match the person or organisation you intend to pay. Stop and verify the details through a trusted channel. A successful transaction sent to the wrong account may be difficult to recover.

Check your phone network and SIM

USSD depends on communication between your mobile network and the bank. A weak signal, temporary congestion or a problem with the SIM can interrupt the session.

Try these simple checks:

  1. Move to an area with a stronger network signal.
  2. End the USSD session and wait a few minutes before starting another one.
  3. Confirm that the SIM linked to the bank account is inserted and active.
  4. If your phone has two SIM cards, use the line registered with the bank.
  5. Restart the phone if the network is behaving unusually.
  6. Check whether ordinary calls or other USSD services are also failing.

Do not repeatedly enter your PIN while testing the network. Several incorrect attempts may lock or restrict access to the USSD service.

Check your balance, limits and account status

A transaction can fail even when you believe there is enough money in the account. The available balance may be lower because of a previous pending transaction, a bank charge or another debit. Check the balance and recent transactions using a trusted banking channel.

Your bank may also apply limits to transfers, airtime purchases, bill payments or USSD transactions. Limits can depend on the account, customer verification level, channel or security settings. If you have recently changed your phone, PIN or account details, additional restrictions may also apply.

For accurate limits and account requirements, contact your bank directly or check its official application or website. Avoid relying on an old social media post or advice from an unofficial agent.

Allow time for a pending transaction

Sometimes the bank receives the request but does not immediately display the result. This can happen during periods of heavy traffic or when the bank and another payment provider are communicating slowly.

Record the time of the attempt and wait briefly before trying again. Then check the account history and recipient’s account. If the transaction remains pending, use the bank’s official support route and provide the reference details. Making several attempts while one is pending increases the risk of paying twice.

What to do when your PIN is rejected

Enter your USSD PIN carefully, but do not guess repeatedly. A PIN is different from your debit card PIN, app password or one-time password unless your bank specifically says otherwise.

If you are unsure of the PIN, stop and use the bank’s official PIN-reset or account-support process. Never disclose your PIN to a caller, chat agent, friend or person claiming to be helping you. Bank staff should not need your full PIN, OTP, password or card security details to investigate a failed transaction.

Be careful with alerts and reversal messages

Fraudsters may use a failed transaction as an opportunity to send fake debit, credit or reversal messages. Treat unexpected messages with caution, especially if someone asks you to provide an OTP, click a link, install an application or send money to “reverse” a transaction.

Verify the transaction in your actual account history rather than relying only on a screenshot or SMS. If you receive a suspicious call or message, end the conversation and contact the bank through an official number or application.

When to contact your bank

Contact the bank promptly if:

  • Your account was debited but the recipient did not receive the money.
  • The same transaction appears more than once.
  • A transaction remains pending for an unusually long time.
  • Your account is debited but the service provider says payment was not received.
  • Your PIN has been blocked or you suspect someone knows it.
  • Your phone or SIM was lost while it was linked to the account.
  • You notice an unfamiliar transaction.

Have the relevant information ready: the account name, transaction amount, approximate time, transaction type, recipient details and reference number. Do not send your PIN, password, OTP or full card details while reporting the issue.

A safer retry workflow

Use this order whenever a USSD transaction fails:

  1. Stop and read the error message.
  2. Check whether the account was debited.
  3. Check the recipient’s account or payment status where possible.
  4. Confirm the network, SIM, balance and transaction details.
  5. Wait if the request may still be pending.
  6. Retry only when you are reasonably sure the first attempt did not complete.
  7. Contact the bank if money is missing, the result is unclear or the error continues.

USSD remains useful for Nigerians who need access to basic banking services without relying on mobile data, but convenience should not replace verification. The safest habit is simple: confirm the result before repeating the request, keep transaction references, and share no secret security information with anyone.
