Admission Screening Requirements: What Prospective Students Should Confirm

Receiving an invitation for admission screening does not always mean that admission has been offered. For many Nigerian universities, polytechnics and colleges of education, screening is part of the process used to assess candidates before a final admission decision is made.

Requirements differ by institution, course and admission route. A candidate applying through UTME may not be asked for exactly the same information as a Direct Entry applicant. Before paying a fee or travelling to a campus, confirm the institution’s official instructions and prepare the documents that apply to your situation.

First confirm what type of screening is involved

The word “screening” can describe different activities. An institution may organise an online screening exercise, a physical document-verification exercise, a post-UTME test, an interview or a combination of these.

Read the notice carefully and confirm:

  • Whether the exercise is online, physical or both.
  • Whether it is called post-UTME, admission screening, verification, aptitude test or interview.
  • Whether registration is compulsory for candidates who want to be considered.
  • The eligible admission year, institution, faculty, course and admission category.
  • Whether the exercise is for UTME candidates, Direct Entry candidates or both.
  • The registration opening and closing dates stated by the institution.

Do not assume that an invitation to register guarantees admission. Screening usually allows the institution to verify eligibility and rank or assess candidates; the final outcome may still depend on the institution’s process and available spaces.

Confirm your eligibility before making payment

Before starting an application, compare your details with the institution’s stated conditions. Important checks may include your UTME registration details, chosen course, subject combination, score requirements published by the institution and your O’level results.

For Direct Entry, the institution may require a recognised diploma, National Diploma, NCE, A-level qualification or another acceptable credential, depending on the course. The exact qualification, grade and subject requirements must come from the institution’s current admission notice.

Also check whether you are allowed to change your course or institution before screening. Some institutions restrict screening to candidates who selected them in JAMB, while others may publish separate instructions for candidates who later changed their choice. Never rely on a social-media post or message from an unofficial agent for this decision.

Documents commonly requested

Every institution sets its own document list, but prospective students are commonly asked to provide some combination of the following:

  • JAMB registration or examination details.
  • JAMB result information where requested.
  • O’level result, such as WAEC, NECO or NABTEB results.
  • Certificate or statement of result for Direct Entry applicants.
  • Birth certificate or declaration of age.
  • Local government identification or state-of-origin information, where required.
  • Recent passport photograph in the required format.
  • Application or screening confirmation slip.
  • Payment receipt or transaction reference.
  • Valid identification document, where requested.

Some courses or categories may require additional documents. For example, a candidate could be asked to provide evidence of a professional qualification, a change-of-course document or a certificate connected to a special admission category.

Prepare clear scans and photocopies, but do not upload or submit extra documents simply because someone says they may be useful. Unrequested personal documents can create privacy and identity risks.

Check your O’level result details carefully

Enter examination details exactly as they appear on your result. Check your name, examination number, examination year, subjects and grades before submitting the form.

If you used more than one sitting, confirm whether the institution accepts the combination and whether both results must be uploaded or presented. Some courses have specific subject requirements, so having the right number of credits is not the only issue. The subjects and grades must also match the course and the institution’s stated conditions.

If your result is being verified through an examination body or an approved platform, follow the institution’s instructions. Do not give your examination scratch-card details, passwords or other sensitive information to an unofficial person.

Understand the payment instructions

Screening may involve a fee, but the amount, payment method and refund policy are institution-specific. Confirm all three from the official admission or screening portal.

Before paying, check:

  • That you are on the institution’s legitimate website or approved portal.
  • That the payment description matches the screening exercise.
  • Whether the portal generates an application number or transaction reference.
  • Whether payment must be made online, through a bank or through a named payment channel.
  • What to do if money leaves your account but the portal does not update.

Save the payment receipt, reference number, confirmation page and important emails. Do not pay into a personal bank account or transfer money to an individual who promises to “secure” admission. No genuine person can guarantee that payment will produce admission.

Prepare for an online or physical exercise

For online screening

Use a reliable internet connection and a device that meets the portal’s requirements. Enter your application number and other details carefully. Keep copies of submitted forms and take note of any examination date, login instruction or technical requirement.

If the portal fails, record the error without exposing your password or one-time code. Try the institution’s stated support channel and retain evidence of payment and attempted registration. Avoid repeatedly submitting forms if you are unsure whether the first submission succeeded.

For physical screening

Confirm the venue, reporting time, permitted items and documents required in original form. Arrange transport early, especially if the campus is outside your town. Use the contact details published by the institution if you need to confirm the venue; do not depend only on a forwarded message.

Carry documents in a secure folder and keep photocopies separate from originals. Do not hand over original certificates permanently to an agent or unknown person.

Keep your personal details secure

Admission forms may contain sensitive information, including your date of birth, examination details, phone number and identification information. Use a strong, unique password where the portal allows one, and avoid sharing your password, PIN, OTP or email access with anyone.

Legitimate staff may need application information to assist with a technical issue, but you should be cautious about requests for banking credentials, card PINs, email passwords or codes sent to your phone. Confirm unusual requests through the institution’s official contact channel.

A simple confirmation workflow

  1. Find the screening announcement on the institution’s official website or verified communication channel.
  2. Confirm the eligible candidates, course categories and admission route.
  3. Write down the deadline, fee, documents, venue or online-test details.
  4. Compare your academic information with the stated requirements.
  5. Complete payment only through the approved method.
  6. Download or print the confirmation slip and receipt.
  7. Check your email, portal and official notices for changes.
  8. Attend the exercise with the correct documents and identification.

Questions to answer before you submit

  • Am I eligible for this screening exercise?
  • Is my course and admission route covered?
  • Have I entered my JAMB and O’level details correctly?
  • Do I understand which documents must be uploaded and which must be brought physically?
  • Did I pay through an official channel?
  • Can I retrieve my confirmation slip and payment evidence?
  • Do I know where to report technical or payment problems?

The safest approach is to treat every admission screening as a verification exercise, not as a guaranteed offer. Confirm instructions directly with the institution, protect your personal information, keep evidence of every submission and payment, and question anyone who promises admission in exchange for secret payments. Careful preparation can prevent avoidable errors and help you respond properly when the institution publishes the next stage.
