Bank account verification can fail even when you believe you have submitted the correct information. A slightly different name, an unclear document image, an expired identification document or a phone number that does not match your records may be enough to delay the process.
This guide explains what to recheck before trying again. It is useful when opening a bank account, upgrading an account, linking a payment service, completing an online banking review or verifying an account with a financial app. Requirements differ between providers, so use this guide to prepare and confirm the final requirements with your bank or service provider.

Start with the exact reason for the failure
Do not immediately upload the same documents again. First read the message shown in the banking app, website, email or SMS. Look for wording such as “details do not match”, “document unclear”, “verification unsuccessful”, “information required” or “manual review”.
The reason can point to the correct solution:
- Details do not match: compare your submitted information with the records connected to your identity documents or bank profile.
- Document rejected: check the document type, validity, image quality and whether all corners are visible.
- Verification pending: avoid creating multiple accounts or repeatedly submitting the same request unless instructed.
- Unable to verify identity: contact official support if your information is correct but the automated check still fails.
Recheck your name carefully
Name differences are a common source of verification problems. Compare the name entered in the account with the name on the identification document and any relevant identity record requested by the provider.
Check the following:
- Spelling of every name, including middle names.
- The order of your first name, middle name and surname.
- Spaces, hyphens and repeated letters.
- Whether a name was changed after marriage or through another legal process.
- Whether you accidentally used a nickname or shortened name.
Do not create a new identity detail simply to make the form match. If your legitimate records contain different names, ask the provider which supporting document or correction process it accepts.
Compare your date of birth and personal details
A wrong date of birth can prevent a successful match even if the rest of your information is correct. Recheck the day, month and year, and pay attention to forms that use a different date format.
Also review your gender, nationality and other personal fields where the service requests them. Enter details exactly as they appear on the accepted document, unless the provider specifically tells you to use another format.
Check BVN, NIN and other identity references
Some Nigerian financial services may request identity references such as a Bank Verification Number or National Identification Number during onboarding or account-related processes. The exact requirement depends on the institution, the service and the type of transaction, so do not assume that one provider’s process applies to another.
Before submitting an identity number:
- Confirm that you are using the correct number and have not confused it with another reference.
- Check that the name and date of birth connected to the record are accurate.
- Use only the provider’s official app, website, branch or verified support channel.
- Do not post your BVN, NIN or other identity number publicly or send it to an unverified person.
If the information linked to your identity record is incorrect, the bank or relevant identity authority may need to guide you through a correction. Repeatedly entering a different number will not solve a record mismatch.
Inspect the identity document before uploading it
When a provider requests an identity document, confirm that it is an accepted document and that it is still valid where validity is required. Providers may accept different documents, so follow the specific list shown in the app or official help centre.
Before taking a photograph or scan, check that:
- The document belongs to you and the details are readable.
- The document is not expired, damaged or heavily worn.
- All required edges, corners, text and photographs are visible.
- There is no glare, shadow, finger covering the document or excessive blur.
- The image is not cropped, edited or altered.
- You have uploaded the correct side when the document has front and back details.
Take the image in good light on a stable surface. Avoid screenshots of documents if the provider requires a live camera capture or original image.
Recheck your address information
Address verification often fails because people enter an informal description while the supporting document shows a different format. Review your house number, street name, town or city, state and country.
Be careful with similar place names and addresses that have changed. If proof of address is required, confirm whether the provider accepts the document you plan to use and whether it must be recent. Do not submit another person’s document unless the provider expressly explains an acceptable process for shared accommodation or a household account.
Confirm your phone number and email address
A verification code may fail because the phone number or email address on the account is incorrect, inactive or different from the contact details registered with the provider.
Check the country code, missing digits, email spelling and access to the relevant inbox or SIM. Also check your spam or junk folder, but do not ask another person to forward a verification code to you.
Never share an OTP, password, card PIN, online banking password or recovery code with anyone claiming to be support. Legitimate support staff should not need your secret authentication details to “complete” verification.
Review account and payment details
If you are linking a bank account to another service, compare the account holder name, bank name, account number and selected account type. A personal account may not match a business profile, and an account belonging to someone else may be rejected.
Use the account details shown through your bank’s official channel. Do not rely on a social media message, forwarded screenshot or unverified agent. If a service asks for a small payment to unlock verification, investigate through its official support channels before paying. Verification scams often use urgency, fake penalties and requests for secret information.
A simple recheck workflow
- Save or note the exact error message without sharing private information publicly.
- Compare your name, date of birth, address, phone number and email with the details on your official records.
- Confirm that the identity document is accepted, valid where required and clearly captured.
- Check that your BVN, NIN or other reference was entered correctly, if requested.
- Use a reliable internet connection and submit through the official app or website.
- Wait for the stated review process instead of opening duplicate accounts.
- Contact official support or visit a branch if the mismatch involves identity records, account ownership or a document correction.
When to stop trying and contact support
Contact the provider when your information is accurate but verification continues to fail, your name or date of birth is wrong in an existing record, your document has been lost or replaced, or your account has been restricted after several attempts.
Use the support number, email address, branch or in-app help option published by the provider. Explain the problem clearly and provide only the information requested through the secure channel. A genuine support process should not require your PIN, password, OTP or full card security details.
The safest approach is to treat verification as a matching exercise: every important detail should be consistent, every document should be clear and current where required, and every submission should go through an official channel. If the problem is caused by an underlying record error, further attempts will not fix it; the correct next step is a formal correction or manual review.
