How to Link or Update Your NIN With the Correct Provider

If a bank, mobile network or digital service asks you to link or update your National Identification Number (NIN), the first step is to confirm which provider is requesting it. A NIN update is not one universal process. The correct procedure depends on whether you are updating a mobile line, a bank account, a fintech profile or another service.

Using the wrong channel, entering a mismatched phone number or submitting your details to an unofficial agent can cause delays and expose your identity information. This guide explains how to choose the correct provider, prepare your details and complete the process more safely.

What does linking your NIN mean?

Linking your NIN means allowing an organisation to associate your NIN with an account, phone line or customer profile held in your name. The organisation may use the information for identity verification and regulatory compliance.

The NIN itself is issued through Nigeria’s identity-management system. However, the organisation asking you to provide it—such as your mobile network or bank—is usually responsible for updating its own customer records. This is why you must use that organisation’s official website, application, customer-care channel or service centre.

Updating your NIN with one provider does not automatically update it everywhere else. For example, updating your NIN with a mobile network will not necessarily update the records connected to your bank account.

Identify the provider before you begin

Read the message or notice carefully. Look for the name of the organisation, the account or service affected and the official method it recommends.

Common situations include:

  • Mobile network: You may be asked to link your NIN to a SIM or update subscriber information.
  • Bank or fintech: You may need to add or correct your NIN in your customer profile or account records.
  • Other digital services: A platform may request identity information as part of account verification, but you should confirm that the request is genuine.
  • NIN record correction: If the problem is with your name, date of birth or other information on the NIN record itself, the correction may need to be handled through an authorised identity-service channel rather than through your bank or network.

Do not assume that a message containing a familiar logo is genuine. Scammers can copy logos, sender names and website designs.

Information to prepare

Before starting, gather only the information the official provider requires. This may include:

  • Your NIN and the phone number or account connected to it.
  • The name and date of birth recorded with the provider.
  • A valid identity document, where the provider requests one.
  • Access to the registered phone number for an authentication code.
  • Your account number, customer ID or registered email address, if applicable.

Check that your personal details match across the documents and the provider’s records. A difference in spelling, name order, date of birth or phone number can cause a verification failure.

Never send your ATM PIN, banking password, one-time password (OTP), card PIN, full card details or cryptocurrency recovery phrase to someone claiming to help with NIN linking. An OTP may be used to approve access or a transaction, not merely to “check” your NIN.

How to link or update your NIN safely

1. Start from an official channel

Open the provider’s official website or mobile application by typing the address yourself or using the application already installed from a trusted source. You can also visit an official customer-care centre or branch.

Avoid links received through random WhatsApp messages, social-media comments, text messages or unofficial blogs. If you received a notification, compare its instructions with information on the provider’s official website or verified social-media account.

2. Select the correct service

Look for an option such as identity verification, customer-information update, NIN linking, profile update or SIM registration support. Do not submit the same information through several unrelated forms simply because one attempt failed.

If the provider offers different options for a new submission, an update or a correction, choose the option that matches your situation. A person correcting an existing record should not normally start a completely new customer profile.

3. Enter your details carefully

Type your NIN and other information slowly. Confirm every digit before submitting. If you are using a phone, check that your browser or application has not replaced numbers or inserted spaces.

Use the phone number and account associated with the provider. If the registered number has changed, follow the provider’s official process for changing contact details first, if required.

4. Complete the verification step

The provider may use an OTP, biometric check, document upload or another verification method. Complete this only inside the official application, website or service centre.

Do not read an OTP aloud to a caller or give remote access to your phone. Genuine staff should not need your private security credentials to submit a basic identity update.

5. Save the confirmation

Keep the reference number, confirmation message, date of submission and the provider’s support details. Take a screenshot only if it does not expose sensitive information, such as a full NIN or account number.

A confirmation that your request was submitted is not always the same as final approval. Check the provider’s account page or contact its official support channel if the status remains pending.

If your NIN update fails

Do not repeatedly submit forms or pay an unverified person to “force” an approval. First check the likely cause:

  • The NIN was entered incorrectly.
  • The name or date of birth does not match the provider’s records.
  • The phone number is not registered to the account or service.
  • The provider’s verification system is temporarily unavailable.
  • Your request was sent through the wrong service or channel.
  • The NIN record itself needs correction.

Contact the provider through its official customer-care route and ask for the exact reason for the failed update. If the provider says the issue is with the NIN record, ask for the authorised process for correcting the record. A bank or telecom company may be able to update its own records, but it may not be able to change information held in the national identity record.

Be careful with agents and payment requests

Some people use agents because they need help with phones, forms or online services. Assistance with operating a device is different from handing over control of your accounts.

If you use an agent or cybercafé, remain present while the form is completed. Do not allow anyone to store your NIN, password or OTP. Log out of accounts, clear downloaded copies of identity documents where appropriate and ask for evidence of any official fee before paying.

Be especially suspicious of messages promising instant approval, threatening immediate account closure or demanding payment into a personal bank account. Confirm the claim directly with the provider.

A simple decision guide

Your problemWhere to start
Your mobile network asks for NIN linkingUse that network’s official app, website, customer-care channel or service centre.
Your bank or fintech requests a NIN updateUse the institution’s official app, branch or verified support channel.
Your name or date of birth on the NIN is wrongAsk an authorised identity-service channel about record correction.
You received a suspicious link or callDo not use the link or disclose information; verify the request independently.

What to remember

The safest way to link or update your NIN is to match the request to the organisation that holds the account or phone line, then use only that organisation’s official process. Check that your details agree, protect your OTP and other security credentials, and keep a record of the submission.

For Nigerians managing several services, each provider may require a separate update. Taking a few minutes to identify the correct provider can prevent failed verification—and reduce the risk of giving sensitive identity information to the wrong person.
