How to Prepare for an International Airport Transfer

An international airport transfer can become stressful when your flight arrives late, your phone has no network, your luggage is delayed or you cannot find the driver. Good preparation reduces these problems and helps you move from the airport to your hotel, home, university or next connection with less confusion.

This guide is useful whether you are travelling from Nigeria to another country, returning home from abroad or arranging transport for a student, worker or family member. The key is to confirm the important details before departure and prepare for what may happen after landing.

Choose the right type of transfer

Airport transport is not always the same. Before booking, decide what service suits your journey, budget and luggage.

  • Private transfer: A driver or vehicle is arranged for you or your group. It is convenient when you have several bags, arrive late or are unfamiliar with the destination.
  • Shared shuttle: You travel with other passengers. It may cost less, but the journey can take longer because of additional stops.
  • Airport taxi: You take a taxi from an approved airport rank after landing. This can be useful when your arrival time may change, but you should understand the airport’s authorised taxi process.
  • Public transport: Trains, buses and other public options may be affordable, but they require more planning, especially with heavy luggage or after a long flight.

Consider your arrival time, destination, luggage, number of passengers, mobility needs and confidence using local transport. A cheaper option is not necessarily better if it involves multiple connections after an overnight flight.

Confirm your flight and destination details

Use the information on your booking confirmation rather than relying only on memory. Check the airport name, terminal, arrival date, scheduled landing time and flight number. Some cities have more than one airport, and a booking made for the wrong airport can create a costly delay.

Give the transfer provider the complete destination address. This should include the hotel, residence, campus accommodation or apartment name, not just the city. If you are travelling to a large building or estate, ask whether the driver can stop at the entrance and whether you need to provide a local contact number.

Flight times can be confusing when a journey crosses time zones. Read the airline itinerary carefully and use the arrival date shown there. If you have a connecting flight, check whether the transfer is needed at your first arrival airport or your final destination.

Book with clear and accurate information

When arranging a transfer, provide the passenger’s name, flight number, arrival airport, arrival time, destination and number of passengers. State how many suitcases and hand bags you expect to carry. A small car may not be suitable for several large boxes or extra luggage.

Ask what the price includes before paying. Important questions include:

  • Is the quoted price for one passenger, one vehicle or the whole group?
  • Are airport parking, tolls, waiting time or additional stops included?
  • What happens if the flight is delayed?
  • Is there a cancellation or change policy?
  • Where will the driver meet the passenger?
  • How will you identify the vehicle and driver?

Keep the booking confirmation, payment receipt and provider’s contact details in more than one place. Save a screenshot on your phone and, if possible, send the details to a trusted family member. This is particularly helpful if you are travelling with a new phone number or expect limited internet access.

Plan for immigration, baggage and delays

Your scheduled landing time is not the same as the time you will leave the airport. International passengers may need to pass through immigration, collect checked baggage, complete customs procedures and walk to the pickup area. These steps can take longer during busy periods.

Tell the provider your flight number so they can monitor or confirm the arrival where their service allows it. Do not assume that a driver will wait indefinitely. Read the waiting-time terms and contact the provider if your flight is delayed or your baggage is missing.

If you have a tight onward connection, do not book a transfer based only on the aircraft’s landing time. Allow time for border checks, baggage collection, airport navigation and unexpected delays. If missing the next flight would cause serious problems, a transfer that is easy to change may be more suitable than the cheapest fixed booking.

Know exactly where to meet the driver

A meeting point should be specific. “Arrivals” may be too broad in a large airport. The confirmation should ideally identify a terminal, arrivals hall, designated transport area, information desk or another recognisable location.

Before travelling, check an airport map if one is available. Some airports do not allow private vehicles to wait directly outside the arrivals doors. The driver may be instructed to use a car park or a particular pickup zone.

Agree on a backup method. For example, if you cannot find the driver, you may be told to call the provider, connect to airport Wi-Fi or go to a specified help desk. Avoid leaving the terminal with a stranger who simply says they are your driver but cannot confirm your name or booking information.

Prepare your phone and payment options

Charge your phone before landing and carry a power bank where permitted. Save the booking confirmation, address and contact numbers offline. If your Nigerian SIM may not work at the destination, check your roaming options before departure or plan to use airport Wi-Fi. Do not depend on internet access that you have not tested.

Carry an appropriate payment option for the journey. If payment is due on arrival, confirm whether the provider accepts a card, cash or another method. Understand the agreed currency and keep a small emergency reserve separate from your main wallet. Never share your PIN, one-time password or online banking login with a driver or transport agent.

Keep essential items with you

Do not put your passport, visa or residence documents, phone, medication, money and important contact details in checked luggage. Keep them in a small carry-on bag that remains with you.

Before leaving the baggage area, check that you have collected the correct bags. A luggage tag, ribbon or other permitted identifier can make your suitcase easier to recognise. If a bag is missing or damaged, report it to the airline’s baggage service before leaving the airport and keep the report reference.

Use safety checks after landing

Use official airport taxi ranks, recognised transfer companies or a booking that you can verify. Be cautious if someone approaches you inside the terminal offering an unusually cheap ride or claiming that your pre-arranged driver is unavailable.

Compare the vehicle details with your confirmation. Ask the driver to confirm the passenger name or booking reference rather than announcing personal information loudly in a crowded area. Share the vehicle registration and your expected arrival time with a trusted person when appropriate.

If something feels wrong, remain in a public, staffed area and contact the provider or airport assistance desk. You do not have to enter a vehicle simply because somebody says they were sent for you.

Prepare a backup plan

Even a well-organised transfer can fail because of a cancelled booking, traffic, lost luggage, phone problems or a flight diversion. Write down the destination address and keep the airport’s official transport information accessible. Know whether there is an approved taxi rank, shuttle desk or public transport option.

If the transfer does not arrive, first contact the provider using the details in your confirmation. Avoid paying a second person immediately unless you understand who they represent and what the new cost is. If you must arrange another ride, use an authorised airport service and keep receipts.

A simple pre-travel transfer checklist

  • Confirm the correct airport, terminal, arrival date and flight number.
  • Provide the full destination address and accurate luggage details.
  • Check the price, waiting time, cancellation terms and payment method.
  • Save the booking confirmation and contact details offline.
  • Agree on a precise meeting point and backup contact method.
  • Charge your phone and prepare a power bank or roaming plan.
  • Keep your passport, travel documents, medication and money in hand luggage.
  • Share the transfer details with a trusted person.
  • Know the official airport taxi or transport alternative.

The best airport transfer plan is not simply the one with the lowest price. It is the one that matches your arrival circumstances, gives you clear instructions and still leaves you with a safe option if the flight, luggage or phone connection does not go as expected. Confirm the details before leaving Nigeria, keep essential information accessible after landing and use official transport channels whenever you are uncertain.
