Online Assessment Tests: How to Prepare Without Breaking the Rules

Online assessment tests can determine whether you move to the next stage of a job, scholarship, internship or training application. They may test numerical ability, verbal reasoning, logical thinking, technical knowledge, personality or workplace judgement.

The best preparation is not trying to find leaked questions or asking someone else to take the test. It is understanding the instructions, practising the skills being assessed and creating conditions in which you can work calmly and independently. Cheating can lead to disqualification, damage your reputation and, in some cases, expose your personal information to scammers.

What an online assessment test may include

There is no single format. An employer, school or programme provider may use one assessment or combine several types.

  • Numerical reasoning: questions involving percentages, ratios, tables, charts, averages or basic calculations.
  • Verbal reasoning: reading a passage and deciding whether a statement is supported, contradicted or not established by the text.
  • Logical or abstract reasoning: identifying patterns, sequences and relationships.
  • Situational judgement: choosing the most appropriate response to a workplace or study-related scenario.
  • Technical tests: questions or tasks related to coding, accounting, writing, data, design or another specific role.
  • Personality questionnaires: statements designed to explore work preferences and behavioural tendencies.
  • Written, video or recorded responses: short explanations, essays or answers to competency questions.

Read the invitation carefully. It should normally explain the deadline, estimated duration, device requirements, permitted materials and whether the test is supervised. If those details are unclear, contact the organisation through an official channel before beginning.

Start with the rules, not the questions

Assessment rules are part of the test. Some assessments allow a calculator, blank paper or specific reference materials. Others require you to work without assistance. A remotely supervised assessment may restrict additional screens, browser tabs, phones, headphones or other people in the room.

Do not assume that something is allowed because it is technically possible. Opening another website, receiving answers through a messaging app, using artificial intelligence to generate responses or asking a friend to help may breach the rules even if the system does not immediately stop you.

Before starting, confirm:

  • Whether a calculator is permitted and what type may be used.
  • Whether notes, formula sheets or other reference documents are allowed.
  • Whether you must keep your camera or microphone on.
  • Whether the test is timed by section or as one complete session.
  • Whether you can return to earlier questions.
  • What to do if your internet connection, browser or electricity fails.

If you need an accessibility adjustment, illness-related accommodation or another reasonable arrangement, request it before the assessment where possible. Do not wait until the timer has started to explain a problem that could have been raised earlier.

How to prepare legitimately

1. Understand the role or programme

Preparation should match the opportunity. A customer-service assessment may focus on communication and judgement, while a data-related role may require numerical or spreadsheet skills. Review the job description, course information or programme requirements and identify the abilities that are likely to matter.

For a Nigerian jobseeker applying to a bank, technology company, graduate programme or remote role, this may mean revising basic numeracy, reading instructions carefully and practising professional judgement. It does not mean memorising supposed leaked questions from an unverified social-media group.

2. Practise the format

Knowing the subject is not always enough. Online tests may present information in a way that is unfamiliar, and the timer can make simple questions feel difficult. Use legitimate sample questions from reputable assessment providers, textbooks, learning platforms or the organisation itself.

During practice, record more than your score. Note whether you lose time on long passages, misread charts, make calculation errors or change correct answers without a good reason. That information is more useful than repeatedly taking random tests without reviewing your mistakes.

3. Build speed without sacrificing accuracy

Timed practice should resemble the real assessment. Set aside a quiet period, use the permitted equipment and avoid checking your phone. Afterward, review each error:

  • Was the question misunderstood?
  • Was a calculation wrong?
  • Did you spend too long on one item?
  • Did you choose an answer based on an assumption not contained in the question?

When a question is taking too long, use the test’s permitted navigation options. If you can return to it, mark it and continue. If you cannot, make the best reasoned choice and move on rather than allowing one question to consume the available time.

4. Practise the underlying skills

For numerical tests, revise percentages, fractions, ratios, averages and interpreting tables. For verbal reasoning, practise separating what a passage actually says from what seems generally true. For logical reasoning, look for changes in position, number, direction, size or repetition.

For situational judgement questions, consider safety, honesty, respect, customer impact, teamwork and escalation. The strongest response is often the one that addresses the issue professionally rather than ignoring it, hiding it or reacting aggressively.

Personality questionnaires require a different approach. Answer honestly and consistently. Trying to select what appears to be the “perfect” personality can produce contradictory answers and may not reflect how you would actually work.

Prepare your technology and environment

A strong score is difficult if your device fails halfway through the assessment. Complete the technical check in advance if one is provided. Confirm that your browser, camera, microphone and operating system meet the stated requirements.

Choose a quiet, well-lit place and charge your device. If you rely on mobile data in Nigeria, check that you have enough data and a backup connection where practical. A backup could be another trusted network or a nearby location with reliable connectivity, but do not move around during a supervised assessment unless the rules allow it.

Close unnecessary applications and notifications. Keep your identification documents nearby only if the provider requests them, and upload them only through the verified assessment platform. Never send a password, one-time password, bank PIN, card details or recovery phrase to someone claiming to be an assessment administrator.

Recognise assessment scams

Scammers sometimes use fake recruitment, scholarship or training tests to collect money or personal data. A genuine opportunity should be traceable to the organisation’s official website, verified social-media account or known recruitment channel.

Be cautious if a supposed recruiter:

  • Demands payment to unlock a test or guarantee selection.
  • Uses an unrelated email address while claiming to represent a major organisation.
  • Pressures you to act immediately or threatens to cancel your application.
  • Requests your banking password, ATM PIN, OTP or cryptocurrency recovery phrase.
  • Sends a suspicious link or asks you to install unknown software.
  • Promises employment or admission solely because you paid for an assessment.

Verify the opportunity independently. Do not rely only on the contact details in an unexpected message, because scammers can imitate logos, names and application forms.

What to do on test day

  1. Sign in early enough to complete identity or system checks without rushing.
  2. Read every instruction, including examples and timing information.
  3. Keep permitted materials within reach and remove prohibited items.
  4. Work steadily and avoid spending too long on one difficult question.
  5. Use only the help or technical-support channel supplied by the provider.
  6. Save confirmation of completion if the platform provides one.

If there is a technical problem, record the time and follow the organisation’s stated reporting process. A brief, factual report is more useful than repeatedly refreshing the page or accepting help from an unofficial contact.

The right preparation is both ethical and practical

Online assessment tests reward preparation, but preparation does not mean obtaining confidential answers. Learn the format, practise relevant skills, check your technology and follow the rules exactly. This approach gives you a fair opportunity to show what you can do and prepares you for later interviews or work tasks, where outside assistance may not be available.

For students, jobseekers and applicants using mobile devices or shared internet connections, the most important step is to plan early. Confirm the requirements, test your setup and verify the opportunity before giving anyone money or personal information. A legitimate assessment should measure your ability—not your willingness to take an unsafe shortcut.
