How to Safely Clear App Data When an App Keeps Crashing

When an app keeps crashing, clearing its data can make it work again—but it can also sign you out, remove downloaded files and erase information stored only on that device. The safest approach is to try less destructive fixes first, confirm that important information is synced or backed up, and clear app data only when necessary.

This guide is written for everyday phone users, including people using banking, messaging, shopping, school, work and news applications. The names of settings may differ slightly depending on your phone manufacturer and operating system version.

Cache and app data are not the same

Many phones offer two separate options:

  • Clear cache: Removes temporary files that the app can usually create again. This normally does not sign you out or delete your account, messages or personal settings.
  • Clear storage, clear data or delete app data: Resets the app’s local information. You may be signed out, lose saved preferences and remove downloads or files that were not synchronised elsewhere.

Because the labels vary, read the confirmation message carefully before tapping the final button. If the phone warns that all app data will be permanently deleted, treat the action as a reset rather than a simple clean-up.

What to check before clearing app data

Do not clear data immediately if the app contains information you cannot easily recover. First ask what the app stores locally and whether that information is connected to an online account.

Confirm that you can sign in again

Make sure you know the correct username, email address or phone number and password. If the app uses two-step verification, confirm that you can access the verification method. Never share your password, PIN, one-time password, card details or recovery phrase with anyone claiming to help.

For a financial-service app, clearing data may require you to complete security checks again. It should not affect money held in your account simply because you reset the app, but you must be able to use the legitimate sign-in and recovery process. If you are unsure, use the provider’s official support channel before proceeding.

Check whether important content is synchronised

Messages, notes, drafts, downloaded videos, offline maps, game progress and documents may be stored on the phone rather than in your online account. Look for a backup, sync or export option inside the app. If the app will open briefly, save important drafts and upload or copy files before resetting it.

Do not assume that uninstalling an app or clearing its data creates a backup. A backup must already exist or be created through the app, your phone’s backup system or a separate secure copy.

Record settings you may need later

Take note of non-sensitive preferences such as notification choices, language, theme or server selection. Do not take screenshots that expose passwords, payment details, authentication codes or private financial information.

Try safer fixes first

A crash can be caused by a temporary problem, a full device, corrupted temporary files or an incompatible update. Work through these steps in order:

  1. Close and reopen the app. Remove it from the recent-apps screen, wait briefly and open it again.
  2. Restart the phone. A restart can end a stuck background process and reload system services.
  3. Check available storage. Very limited storage can prevent apps from creating temporary files. Remove unnecessary downloads or move personal files safely, but avoid deleting unfamiliar system folders.
  4. Update the app from the official store. Avoid downloading random installation files from websites or links sent through social media.
  5. Update the phone when an official update is available. Keep the phone connected to power and use a trusted internet connection where practical.
  6. Check the app’s permissions. If a permission was removed, the app may fail when it tries to use a camera, microphone, storage or location feature. Only grant permissions that make sense for the app.
  7. Clear the cache. This is usually the least disruptive reset on Android.

If the app still crashes after these steps, clearing its data may be reasonable—provided you have checked your sign-in details and backed up anything important.

How to clear app data on Android

Android menus differ between manufacturers, so the wording on a Samsung, Tecno, Infinix, Google Pixel or other phone may not be identical. The general process is:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Open Apps, Applications or App management.
  3. Select the app that keeps crashing.
  4. Tap Storage or Storage and cache.
  5. Tap Clear cache first, if you have not already tried it.
  6. If the problem continues, choose Clear storage, Clear data or a similarly named option.
  7. Read the warning, confirm the reset, then open the app and sign in again if required.

Do not confuse clearing data with clearing your phone’s entire storage. Select the individual app and check the name at the top of the screen before confirming.

What about iPhone and iPad?

iOS and iPadOS do not generally provide the same universal “clear app data” button found on Android. You can often try closing the app, restarting the device, updating the app and checking free storage first.

For a deeper reset, open Settings, choose General, then iPhone Storage or iPad Storage, and select the affected app. Depending on the available options:

  • Offload App removes the app but keeps certain documents and data on the device for possible reinstallation.
  • Delete App removes the app and its local data. Reinstalling it may restore information only if that information was synchronised or backed up.

Some apps also include their own reset, logout or download-management controls. Check inside the app before deleting it. After reinstalling, download it from the official App Store and sign in using the correct account.

After the reset

Open the app before restoring every setting or downloading large amounts of content. Test the function that was causing the crash. For example, try loading one page, sending a test message or opening a non-sensitive section.

If it works, restore settings gradually. Reinstalling every add-on or downloading all offline content at once can make it harder to identify the cause if the crashing returns.

If the app still crashes

Repeated crashes after a reset may indicate a faulty app release, an operating-system compatibility problem, damaged device storage, a server-side outage or an issue specific to your account. Try the following:

  • Check whether other apps work normally.
  • Test the app on a reliable connection, such as trusted Wi-Fi or mobile data.
  • Look for an official support page or service-status notice.
  • Reinstall the app only after confirming your data is backed up.
  • Contact the developer or service provider and include the phone model, operating-system version and what happens before the crash.

When reporting a problem, do not send your password, PIN, OTP, full card number or recovery phrase. A genuine support representative should not need those secrets to investigate a crash.

A simple decision rule

Use this order: restart, update, check storage, clear cache, back up important information, then clear app data or reinstall. Skip a step only when you understand its effect.

Clearing app data is a useful troubleshooting tool, not a magic repair and not a routine maintenance task. The key is to separate temporary files from information that belongs to you. Once you know what the reset removes and how you will sign in again, you can troubleshoot confidently without turning a small app problem into lost data or an avoidable account-security risk.
